Vego Composter

Science-Backed Composting
Tested & Proven by LSU

Independent testing at LSU confirmed what we already knew—Vego Meal (the compost that comes out of your Vego Composter) works. As composting time increased, particle size decreased, making Vego Meal easier to blend into garden soil. Biological and chemical differences showed Vego outperformed competition in compost maturity and nutrient availability. Vego Meal supported stronger plant growth, with higher biomass and chlorophyll (SPAD) readings across the board.

The Food Waste
Problem

U.S. households generate an estimated 26.5 million tons of food waste each year, yet only 4.1% of that waste is composted—most ends up in landfills. Composting at home is a powerful way to reduce waste, but for many—especially apartment dwellers—traditional outdoor composting isn’t feasible.

That’s why we created the Vego Kitchen Composter & why we put it to the test - so that more people can compost successfully at home.

We Asked The Experts

Dr. Ed Bush and his team at the LSU AgCenter Horticulture Department ran a independent study comprised of a series of rigorous tests to find out whether the Vego Composter creates true compost—and how it compares to competitors.

Their goal: determine nutrient levels, compost maturity, and how well the finished compost performed in real soil with real plants.

The Study, Simplified

To best replicate the food waste of an average household, researchers fed their composters (Vego and a competitor) potatoes, bread, chicken, apples, milk, and coffee - representative of the standard American diet.

Each batch included the corresponding microbe tablets, and was processed continually for increments of either one, five, or 10 days.

LSU measured results in two major ways - by analyzing substrates’ features and applying it to real plants

Vego Composter
Each sample was blended with pine bark soil and used to grow lettuce and petunias measured plant growth, biomass, chlorophyll levels (SPAD), and tissue nutrient content.
Vego Composter
Each sample was analyzed for maturity using the Solvita® Index, particle size, bulk density, and nutrient content (N, P, K, Ca, etc.).

Measuring The Compost

(N, P, K, Ca, etc.) all common measures of compost and growing substrates.
Vego Composter
Particle Size
As compost breaks down, coarse scraps are reduced to finer particles that blend better into soil and support even moisture distribution. Vego compost became significantly finer by Day 10, outperforming competitors & resulting in a texture ideal for direct soil integration.
Vego Composter
Compost Maturity
Compost maturity refers to how completely organic material has broken down into a stable, plant-safe form. Vego’s 10-day compost achieved a top-tier Solvita® score of 7–8, indicating it’s ready for garden use—unlike competitor composts that remained partially active.
Vego Composter
Bulk Density
Bulk density affects how well compost retains water while allowing airflow to plant roots. Vego compost hit an optimal balance—light enough to encourage root growth, yet dense enough to hold moisture—making it well-suited for a wide range of gardening applications.
Vego Composter
Nutrient Content
Nutrient-rich compost feeds plants with essential elements like nitrogen, potassium, and calcium. In LSU’s study, Vego compost consistently delivered higher nutrient levels the competitor, leading to increased plant biomass and stronger, more vibrant growth.
